The mallard is one the most common duck in the Mont Saint-Hilaire Biosphere Reserve. It can be found just about anywhere there is a pond or lake. The male is easy to identify with its shimmering green head and neck. The female, whose colouring is more subtle, usually lays clutches of about nine eggs. In recent years, some mallards have stopped making their annual pilgrimage to the south when winter comes. Whether the change is due to shifting weather patterns or new sources of food is still unclear.
