On the summits of Mont Saint-Hilaire, red oak trees grow in thin soil. These oaks are often small and twisted, because the summits present difficult conditions. Red oak groves are rare in Montérégie. For this reason, they are designated an “Exceptional Forest Ecosystem” in Quebec. In the spring, the flowering cherry trees and serviceberries charm hikers, while in the fall, the scarlet red of the oak trees draws the most attention.
