Peatlands are characterized by organic soil made up of black plant-based material that is not fully decomposed, known as peat. Its soil drains poorly and is generally at the same level as the groundwater. Rare in our region, peatlands are acidic areas dominated by peat mosses and bushes in the cornflower family. They sometimes contain trees such as the red spruce, the larch, the red maple and the grey birch. The last peatlands in the Mont Saint-Hilaire Biosphere Reserve can be found in La Présentation and Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu.
