Bloodroot is one the first plants to bloom in the spring. Look for its multi-lobed leaves and flowers with 8 to 16 snow-white petals. Growing in fertile maple stands, its leaves and rhizome contain a blood-red latex once used as a medication for pulmonary disorders. However, it is a very poisonous plant and its acrid taste generally puts off even the most adventurous predators.
