Swamps are areas characterized by trees and shrubs that grow in sandy or organic soil. They rest on a high water table or are subject to seasonal flooding. Swamps are the most common type of wetland found in the forests of the Mont Saint-Hilaire Biosphere Reserve. They contain red maples, black ashes, willows, alders, hemlocks, and many other species. Always flooded in springtime, some swamps dry out for several months of the year.
